Southwestern Public Health is reminding residents of the importance of protecting yourself from the sun and the heat this summer. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for St. Thomas and Elgin County as temperatures this week have been in the low 30s, feeling more like the high 30s with the humidex.
The health unit recommends avoiding going out in the heat and being in an air-conditioned building if possible.
Program Manager for Environmental Health Amy Pavletic says that the sun is strongest during midday.
Pavletic says that it is very important to check on the elderly, the young and anyone else who you feel is vulnerable to the extreme heat.
