Residents of the Elgin Centre area voiced their concerns with the proposed Holiday Inn Express Hotel for the mall. A public input meeting on the 5 storey, 92 room proposal happened on Monday night (July 15) at City Hall.
The main concerns raised by those in attendance included the increased traffic, impact on busing, parking and snow removal.
Rickwood Place Resident Margaret DeBolt says her main concern is for the safety of children in the neighbourhood.
DeBolt says that while she is not against the proposed hotel in the Elgin Centre she wants to make sure it is the best location for a hotel in the City.
Planner with MHBC Planning Representing the Elgin Centre Stephanie Mirtitsch says that they will be taking the feedback into their future planning.
Mirtitsch says that traffic reports were prepared as part of the application and parking for the hotel would take up 92 of the 1,100 spaces at the Elgin Centre that are currently not at capacity.
The proposed hotel would be located in the west end of the mall in the unused space beside Giant Tiger. It would include a lobby, fitness area, pool and meeting room and have 2 entrance points.
The proposal to the bylaw amendment includes the opportunity for future residential units that front onto Wellington Street.
Staff will review all the information from the meeting and make a recommendation to council at a future meeting.
