The Ontario SPCA is reminding pet owners to take the correct steps in order to keep your animals safe from the sun and the heat this summer. With temperatures reaching levels as high as 40 degrees so far this summer, you are being reminded that if it is too hot for you to be outside, then it is definitely too hot for your pet to be outside.
Leaving your pet alone in a hot car, even in the shade with the windows down can be a risk. Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days. Making sure your pet always has access to fresh water as well as a cool, sheltered place is also important in order for them to avoid heat stroke.
Using caution when exercising or playing with your pet during heat waves is vital in preventing heat exhaustion. Tips to avoid this include going for walks in the early morning or evening when it isn’t as hot outside. It is also recommended that animals are only left outdoors for short periods of time and should never be left outside in the heat when someone is not home to attend to them.
If you witness any animals suffering in the heat, you are being ask to take action and callĀ 1-833-926-4625.
