Shovels are expected to be in the ground by early October on the land where the new Element5 cross laminated timber (CLT) plant will be.
As myFM first informed you late last month, plans for the $32 million dollar plant that is to be built on Dennis Road in St. Thomas will be the first of it’s kind in Ontario and will create upwards of 70 jobs.
myFM was invited to sit in on Element5’s presentation on their company’s plan for the facility in the city and learned that the cross laminated timber that is going to be produced at the facility will allow construction projects that usually take anywhere from 10-12 months to complete, be completed in a little as 9 weeks. The plant is also expect to create 50,000m³ of mass timber each year which will equal roughly 20, 6 story mass timber buildings per year.
CEO of the St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation Sean Dyke says some of the next steps in the process are already in the works before construction has even begun.
Element5 will be looking to hire engineers, programmers, and operators by early 2020 and the hope is that the facility to be up and running and producing CLT by late 2020
