The OPP are warning residents about the most recent scam that has surfaced the area. The most recent report claims that the victim was contacted by an individual who was claiming to be an “Apple” employee. The scammer then advised the victim that his phone would be locked if he didn’t purchase a total of $15, 000 in Google Play gift cards and provide them with the serial numbers on the cards.
The OPP are urging everyone to vigilant when money or gift cards are requested from someone that you do not know. They warn that scammers are continually trying to find new ways of spinning this old scam or requesting money. Some of these can go as far as scammers trying to gain access to your banking information and SIN information.
Some other scams to look out for can include fake job proposals, prizes, and foreign money exchanges. You are reminded to always think it over and trust your gut if you feel that you are being taken advantage of by a scammer.
