Living Wage St. Thomas – Elgin is encouraging the Corporation of the City of St. Thomas to become a living wage employer. Representatives from the organization asked council to join the global initiative during a deputation at Monday night’s (September 9) council meeting. A living wage is the minimum amount of earnings needed for a worker to meet the basic needs in the community. The local living wage is $16.57.
Co-Chair Donna Rankin says that paying a living wage would help residents in different classes.
City Council voiced their interest in exploring the possibility of the City paying above the living wage, which Rankin says were welcomed comments. Council and staff will discuss the matter at a future reference committee meeting.
