A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for St. Thomas and Elgin County. The area will see increasing cloudiness near noon with a 60 percent chance of showers and risk of a severe thunderstorm this afternoon. Thunderstorms will develop over Lower Michigan and move into Ontario this afternoon. The main threats with these thunderstorms are damaging wind gusts and heavy rain.
Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
