Hawk Cliff Weekends will continue this Saturday and Sunday in the Hawk Cliff Woods in Union. The annual event has been hosted for over 40 years by the St. Thomas Field Naturalists Club, Hawk Cliff Raptor Banders, and volunteers of Monarch Watch.
The free outdoor event will be taking place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday (Sept 28 & 29), with the last presentation beginning at 2 p.m. Attendees will be able to get up close and personal with both monarch butterflies and birds of prey with their Hawk Talks and Monarch Butterfly Talks.
The Hawk Talk will include the showing of live specimens of the various types of birds of prey that have been caught and banded shortly before the demonstration. They will also talk about the different species, how and why the birds are banded, the distinguishing features, how the bird lives, what they eat, and so much more. Butterfly lovers will also get a chance to learn about the Monarch, including their migration patterns, population and how the destruction of habitats are contributing to their decline.
These presentations will be held in open air tents, with seating available on a first come, first serve basis at 4799 Hawk Cliff Road. For more information about the event you can click here.
