Two people have been charged following a string of thefts that occurred at several city owned properties throughout the summer. The St. Thomas Police Services Street Crimes Unit investigated the mysterious thefts and found almost $3,400 in cash and property were stolen from several buildings between July and August, one small quantity at a time. A 23 year old and 14 year old were identified as the 2 suspects in relation to the string of thefts and taken into custody.
Throughout the investigation it was discovered that the first incident began back in November when the 23 year old man entered the Parks and Recreation Office at Pinafore Park and stole cash, a ring of keys, and the office pet rescue rabbit. Beginning in July, the 23 year old along with his 14 year old accomplice began trying the keys at several locations around the city, discovering they could gain access to the building at Athletic Park along with the Canteen and offices in Pinafore Park. The 2 were able to steal food, cash, and soccer equipment with access from the stolen keys.
The adult was charged two counts Break, Enter and Theft and one count Mischief Under $5000. He was released on a Promise to Appear in Court. The youth was also charged one count Break, Enter and Theft and one count Mischief Under $5000 and will attend a diversion program as stipulated in the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
