The Thanksgiving Long weekend saw officers out and about monitoring roads throughout Elgin County. The St. Thomas Police Service participated in the national “Operation Impact” campaign that is aimed at making Canadian roads safer by promoting safe driving habits and ticketing violators.
Officers handed out just under 50 tickets over the weekend with most being for speeding at 34 tickets issued. The STPS also laid 4 tickets for cell phone use, 3 for failure to stop for a stop sign and 2 for failure to wear a seat belt. The Police Service reports that no tickets were laid for impaired driving over the course of the weekend with 11 drivers tested for alcohol consumption all resulting in a pass.
The Aylmer Police Service did report that a 57 year old female from Aylmer was arrested and charged on Saturday (Oct 12) night with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus after officers witnessed the woman drifting from the traveled portion of the lane across the right side white fog line. Tests determined that the woman was twice over the legal limit.
Overall, police are thanking residents for their help in keeping the roadways safe over the weekend.
