The Elgin County OPP has identified the deceased driver in Friday’s fatal collision on Highway 401. 34-year-old Benjamin Dionisio of Toledo, Ohio was the lone casualty as a result of the 5 vehicle collision that took place on the 401 between Iona Road and Union Road Friday morning.
As myFM first informed you, the collision involved two tractor-trailers, a 5 tonne commercial truck and 2 passenger vehicles that occurred when the vehicles were all merging into a single lane because of upcoming construction. Emergency crews including the Southwold Fire Department, St. Thomas Elgin Paramedics and an air ambulance responded. One person was taken to hospital by air ambulance and another by land both with serious injuries.
No update has been released in relation to the 2 others that were taken to hospital. The Elgin County OPP are still investigating the matter and ask that any witnesses who have yet to come forward to please contact them.
