St. Thomas Mayor and former Elgin-Middlesex-London Member of Parliament Joe Preston says that there were no real surprises in this year’s federal election. Preston says that he believed that Canada was going to elect a minority government one way or the other, and a Liberal minority is what the country voted for.
The riding re-elected Conservative Karen Vecchio to the house of commons.
Preston says that Vecchio is one of the hardest working Members of Parliament.
The Liberals and NDP decreased by roughly 20 seats, while the Conservatives increased by around 20 seats. The Bloc Québécois more than tripped their seats in the house with 32.
Preston says that the Bloc Québécois’ increase is concerning.
Preston says that a minority government can mean positives things for municipalities as the other parties will put pressure on the government to make sure funds are not being set aside for the next election.
Preston says that a minority government will show Canadians how well the parties work together.
Preston says that he believes that the minority government will last between a year to a year and a half. Preston says that he was also pleased in the over 61,000 residents in the Elgin-Middlesex-London riding who exercised their right to vote.
