Southwestern Public Health is reminding pet owners of the importance of keeping rabies vaccinations up to date after a wild mink tested positive for the rabies virus in the Port Stanley area. It is believed that the wild animal that tested positive for the disease did not expose the virus to any people or pets, but it serves as a good reminder to keep vaccines up to date.
Rabies is caused by a virus that can infect any mammal, including humans and pets. The virus is found in saliva and can be spread through bites that break the skin, saliva infecting a open cut or getting into your or your pets mouth, nose, or eyes. The rabies vaccine protects pets against the disease as once symptoms appear it is often to late as the disease is virtually fatal.
The health unit recommends talking to your vet about an appropriate vaccination schedule for your pet.
