A Thames Valley District School Board Trustee is trying to have New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools stay open. Elgin County Trustee Meagan Ruddock put a motion on the floor at a recent meeting for the closures of New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools to be rescinded.
The motion was deferred to the November 26th trustee meeting.
In 2017 the trustees voted in favour of closing the schools when capital funding for a new school in Belmont and a new school in southeast St. Thomas is received.
Ruddock says that New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools should be removed from the business case for a new school in Belmont. Ruddock says this is due in part to the over 300 new homes that are being built in Belmont, meaning more kids.
Ruddock says that she believes Belmont has a strong enough business case on their own without adding the children from New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools.
The trustees will be receiving updated reports from senior administration on November 12th. On November 19th they will hear delegations from Springfield, New Sarum and the new Belmont community before debating and voting on the motion on November 26th.
