As people prepare for Daylight Saving Time this Sunday, the St. Thomas Fire Department are hoping people will use this time to also check their smoke detectors. Daylight savings time will be taking place this Sunday (Nov 3) at 2 a.m., meaning everyone must turn their clocks back an hour. Although many clocks including cell phones, tablets, and computers will most likely change automatically, antilog clocks, watches, ovens, and microwaves may need to be changed by hand.
Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun says that daylight savings is a perfect time to check to make sure that smoke detectors still work, and if necessary replace the batteries.
Destun says that all smoke detectors that have been damaged, painted over, or are over 10 years old should be replaced.
This time also serves as a good reminder for homeowners to get all fuel-burning appliances inspected to prevent CO leaks as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week takes place from November 1st-7th.
