A petition encouraging St. Thomas City Council to apply for government funding to bring a new community centre with an indoor pool to the City now has over 1,700 signatures and letters of support from other organizations. The petition started after representatives from The St. Thomas Jumbo Jets Swim Team made a deputation to council earlier this month asking them to apply for federal and provincial funding to bring a new pool to the City.
The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) is providing $30 billion to municipalities through cost-sharing with the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
The online petition was started as a way to show council the public’s interest in this proposal. The swim team has also received support from Special Olympics St. Thomas, St. Thomas Minor Hockey, St. Thomas Pickleball Club and The Forest City Sport and Social Club.
Council will be provided with an update from staff on the funding application options at Monday night’s reference committee meeting. The deadline for applications is November 12th.
