Six local organizations received a portion of nearly 2,000 pounds of apples that the Elgin Gleaners picked from Great Lakes Farms last week. The food share program in partnership with the YWCA St. Thomas Elgin and the Southwestern Public Health Unit sees volunteers pick produce that would not normally be harvested in the community.
One third is given to the farm, one third to the volunteers and the remaining third to charity.
Communications Office Manager Melissa Kempf goes over where the apples were donated to.
Kempf says that this was their 8th pick of the year and they have chosen different recipients each time. This is the 3rd year that the Elgin Gleaners have been in existence.
