A St. Thomas company has been fined $50,000 from the Ministry of Labour after an employee fell off of a ladder. The incident happened at Maxill Inc. in September of 2018 when a worker was critically injured from falling from a stepladder while attempting to access the roof of the business.
The report indicates that the employee was instructed to inspect the drains on the roof. The worker climbed a 6 foot aluminum stepladder to get to a fixed access ladder on the side of the building. The worker fell off of the top cap of the stepladder onto a concrete pad below which caused the critical injury. The Ministry says that Maxill Inc. did not take the reasonable precautions to make a safe access to the roof.
The $50,000 fine was imposed in response to a guilty plea. A 25% victim fine surcharge has also been imposed which will go to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
