Southwestern Public Health is ending off Lung Cancer Awareness Month and National Radon Action Month by giving away free radon test kits. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the ground and is found in all homes. Radon is also the second leading cause of Lung Cancer in non-smokers killing more than 32 hundred Canadians annually.
Southwestern Public Health is encouraging Elgin County and St. Thomas residents to use this time of year to test their homes as a first step in protecting themselves against radon gas exposure. The Health Unit will be distributing a limited supply of 200 free test kits to homeowners to encourage testing in the region.
Pick up for these free tests begin on Monday, November 25th from at 8:30 a.m. at the Southwestern Public Health building on 1230 Talbot Street. Those who do not receive a free test can purchase them at a reasonable cost at most home improvement stores.
