The Thames Valley District School Board Trustees have voted in favour of rescinding the decision to close both New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools. Both schools in Elgin County will remain open for the time being following a vote that took place tonight (Nov 26).
The Board did put forth separate votes for both the cases of New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools, with both votesĀ supporting the motionĀ to keep the schools open.
Many trustees made comments prior to the vote backing the motion to rescind the closing of both schools. Though most seemed to support the rescinded motion, multiple trustees made comments in regards to not the specific rescinded motion but going back on a decision that was already made by the board. Despite the mixed comments prior to the vote, all but 2 boards members supported to decision to keep both Elgin County schools open.
The need for this vote comes after Elgin County Trustee Meagan Ruddock put forward a motion to rescind the 2017 decision to close both New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools in June of 2020.
Ruddock did end the meeting by putting forth a new motion that the new business case for a Belmont School as well as the existing case for Eagle Heights School be the top priority capital project for the board. The board voted unanimously in support of the motion.
