A new roundabout is one of the recommendations that City Staff are suggesting to reduce the speed of traffic in the Kains Street and Scott Street corridor. Staff began looking into the speed of traffic, pedestrian crossing and intersection opportunities in the area earlier this year at the request of City Councillor Steve Peters.
A proposed roundabout at the intersection of Kains Street/Scott Street and St. Catharine Street is being recommended due to the amount of property surrounding the intersection and the effectiveness of them calming traffic in other areas of the City.
Peters says that because the report includes future recommendations, the speeding will continue.
Peters says that he would like to see a real crosswalk at Kains Street/ Scott Street and St. Catharine Street intersection and not the courtesy crossing that’s currently in place.
Staff say that an all-way stop and traffic signals are not warranted due to the most recent traffic study. Staff are also recommending bump outs during the next reconstruction to reduce the width of the road which would shorten the crossing distance and also reduce the speed of vehicles.
Staff are also recommending making Scott Street and Curtis Street two way streets as a way to slow traffic and make it easier for residents and businesses to access their properties.
The report was received for information and the recommendations are to be considered as capital projects in the future.
