St. Thomas Elgin Second Stage Housing in partnership with Fanshawe College St. Thomas – Elgin Regional Campus held a ceremony on Friday (December 6) to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against women. The day also marked the 30 year anniversary of the 1989 tragedy where 14 young women were shot and killed in a mass shooting at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal.
The brief ceremony involved the laying of 14 roses in front of a plaque with all of the 14 girls names on it.
Second stage housing says that this day is important because everyone has a role that they play in making a culture of respect and ensuring that a tragedy like the one 30 years ago never happens again.
The ceremony also shines a light on the issue of violence against women in the local community and speaks out against it in all forms.
