St. Thomas is moving ahead with a proposal for a Regional Transit Pilot project that would improve connectivity between St. Thomas and other municipalities in the area including London. The City’s draft proposal would see the Province fund the 3 year $975,000 project.
The proposed project would provide transit from St. Thomas to London, Aylmer, and Port Stanley in the form of 23 different runs by one of the City’s existing buses.
The bus would leave from the transit station in St. Thomas in the SmartCentres plaza and end in London at White Oaks Mall where riders can then access the London Transit System.
Mayor Joe Preston says that the Province is already funding similar projects.
Preston says that right now they believe the fare would be $10 one way to London or $15 return.
The proposed runs would begin in St. Thomas at 7 a.m. with the last bus leaving London at 8 p.m.
The City is in the midst of acquiring letters of support from neighbouring municipalities and the Mayor will then be presenting the project to the Minister of Transportation as soon as he can. The City would ideally hear back on the proposal before midsummer of 2020.
