A St. Thomas resident who is currently serving in Iraq is proof that letters sent to Canadian Soldiers over the holidays do in fact make it to them. Lieutenant Colonel Blair Ashford, who is also the Commanding Officer for the 31 Combat Engineer Regiment here in St. Thomas received an Operation Santa Claus box that contained a letter from a grade 4 boy named Lucas who lives in Ontario, with no return address.
Although Ashford was not given a return address, he provided a response to all of Lucas’s question through a post on his Facebook page. Ashford answered questions about his favourite sports, what he does in his spare time, among others, before ending the letter by wishing Lucas a Merry Christmas.
When myFM spoke with Ashford’s wife Karen, she said that although the initial writing of the response letter was not an effort to find Lucas, it has since become a mission for some following the post to see if it makes its way back to him. The post currently has over 350 shares and has been shared all across Canada from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island.
