Teachers and education workers in St. Thomas that are represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation are once again spending their day out at the picket line. The Thames Valley District School Board is 1 of 10 boards where teachers are participating in the walkouts today.
myFM visited Parkside Collegiate Institute where dozens of teachers and education workers are picketing outside to protest changes made by the province, including increased class sizes, which has led to a loss of courses for students and layoffs for teachers.
History teacher and branch representative at Parkside Jordan Hayler says those who may not understand or support their decision to strike, need to think about their long term goal.
Hayler says that their hasn’t been much movement from the government and with bargaining talks called off until the new year, they are prepared to continue striking if necessary no matter the weather that January is sure to bring. Similar strikes are taking place throughout Elgin County today, including in front of MPP Jeff Yurek’s office.
All high schools that were closed across the Thames Valley District School Board today will resume classes tomorrow.
