A fire that took place early this morning (Dec 23) in Sparta has completely destroyed a beloved local business. When fire crews arrived at Winter Wheat in Sparta around 2 a.m. this morning the entire building was involved in flames.
myFM spoke with Central Elgin Fire Chief Chris McDonough who says 3 of their stations as well as a tanker from Malahide responded to the fire after one of the owners of the business noticed the fire on the back of their property while letting their dog out. McDonough reports that the entire store is gone as a result of the fire. The Chief estimates around $400,000 worth of damages were caused by the early morning fire.
McDonough says that the fire did not come as a result of suspicious activity, however due to the severity of the damage, they do not believe that a cause of fire will be found. Fire crews have extinguished a majority of the fire but have brought in special equipment to help them with hot spots that still need to be worked on.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
