As Canadians prepare to welcome in 2020, MADD Canada is reminding everyone to include sober transportation in your New Year’s party plans. Every year, hundreds of people are killed and thousands more are injured in car accidents involving alcohol and or drug impairment. With many parties planned to ring the New Year, it is important to have a safe ride home if you are consuming alcohol or partaking in the use of drugs.
Doing something as simple as calling an Uber or a cab, arranging a designated driver, taking public transit or staying the night could mean the difference between life and death. MADD Canada reminds us that these decisions will not only help to save your own life, but also the lives of others.
Party hosts are also reminded to take some responsibility for the safety of their guests. Tips include having having lots of food and non-alcohol/low alcohol beverages available and be prepared to have intoxicated guests spend the night at your house.
You are also reminded to never get into the car with a driver who is impaired and to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers, even if that means phoning the police on a loved one or friend.
