A man is in custody after a harrowing overnight incident.
On December 31st at 1:30 am an officer on routine patrol spotted a pick up truck travelling north on First Ave. at an unusually low speed.
As the officer attempted to speak with the lone male occupant operating the vehicle the suspect put the truck in reverse and allegedly rammed the cruiser in an attempt to flee.
The suspect put the vehicle in drive and drove up onto a neighbouring lawn, fleeing northbound on First Ave. at a high rate of speed.
When the suspect came upon a dead end street he raced westbound on on Locust St., narrowly missing a head on collision with a responding police cruiser.
Police successfully deployed a spike belt, causing two of the tires to deflate.
Police chased the man on foot, successfully apprehending him a short distance away. Investigation revealed the truck had been stolen from London and the suspect was a suspended driver.
The 23 year old St. Thomas man is charged with several offences including: Fail to Stop at the Scene of an Accident, Flight from Police, and Possession of Stolen Property, Prohibited Driving, Drive While Under Suspension, 2 counts of Breach of an Undertaking, and 2 counts of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
