A local man has been scammed out of more than $6,000.
St. Thomas Police say the victim received a Facebook message from someone he thought was his cousin, who advised that he should apply for a government grant which would see him collect $280,000 in cash for a small processing fee.
It turns out the cousins account had been hacked and the victim was speaking with scammers.
The victim forwarded the money expecting to receive a cash delivery via Fedex. The delivery did not arrive as scheduled and when the victim contacted the scammer, he was advised the delivery was being held by the Canadian Revenue Agency who demanded an additional $12,000 to be paid in taxes on the money.
