The Coldest Night of the Year walk is coming up on February 22nd here in St. Thomas.
Put on by the Elgin County Youth For Christ/Youth Unlimited and The Upper Room, the evening offers a family friendly 2, 5, or 10k walk that raises money for the work the organizations do.
The Upper Room houses local youth who are struggling with homelessness and have no place to turn, while also providing food security and basic necessities such as personal hygiene products, clothing, and grocery/restaurant cards to youth in immediate need.
Event Director Kyle Rolph says the purpose of the night is to give people a small taste of what vagrancy is like in the winter months.
The walk starts at the Youth Centre and goes throughout downtown St. Thomas. Participating teams will gather sponsors with the money raised going back to the organizations.
You can register your team anytime including on the day of the event. Rolph says a team can be of any size including if it’s just yourself or you and a friend. Everyone who participates receives a coldest night of the year toque as well.
