Today myFM is celebrating local coaches and the impact they’ve had on athletes in Elgin County with our Hooray for Coaches Day feature, presented by Briwood Farm Market.
We spoke with Troy Rick who does a lot of work with youth athletes throughout Elgin County. Rick currently coaches’ grade 7 and 8 boys’ basketball through St. Thomas Shock, Rams Seniors boys’ basketball at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, the Peewee travel team through St. Thomas Minor Baseball and also runs training programs at the Power Alley for St. Thomas Minor Baseball.
Like many coaches, Rick first got involved when his kids began playing sports, and as someone who grew up playing many sports himself, he felt like he could provide great insight as a coach.
When speaking with Rick we asked him what advice he had for future coaches and he said to get involved and stay involved.
As someone who has been coaching for a number of years, Rick says one of the main things he gets out of the experience is the satisfaction of shaping a future leader in the community.
Rick adds that over the years his teams have seen many great accomplishments such as WOSA Championships and OBA Championships but his favourite accomplishment is seeing the young players he has coached that have moved onto the high school and even university level, grow into adults and leaders themselves.
