Although disposable wipes are a great convenience around the home, they do not flush as well as it was once suggested, and they were recently the culprits behind clogged sewage pipes in the James Turvey area of Central Elgin. The wipes have proved to be a headache for staff in both Central Elgin and St. Thomas.
Paul Barletta, Central Elgin’s water and wastewater superintendent, explains what can happen when you dispose of them by flushing.
Barletta advises although these are great to use, they do not flush as well as it was once suggested, and cause a major expense to correct in order to have the drains flowing properly again.
Barletta says sewage pipes clogged by disposable wipes is a growing problem across the province.
Barletta advises residents in Central Elgin and St. Thomas to avoid flushing disposable wipes down drains at all times.
