A 55 year old St. Thomas man is facing a Public Mischief charge after leading officers on a bogus robbery investigation. Police report that the incident began last week when the man called 911 just after 5 a.m. on Saturday, stating that he had been robbed in the parking lot of a Talbot Street business. In the report he told police that when he got out of his car he was struck in the back of the head, rendering him unconscious. The man reported that when he awoke his wallet containing $200 and his cigarettes had been stolen.
Police were able to secure security video footage from the area following the incident. Police report the recording captured a different series of events that did not support the claim a robbery had taken place. The man was recorded pulling his vehicle into the lot, getting out to rummage through the trunk then getting back into the driver’s seat, with police cruisers pulling up a couple of minutes later.
Officers determined the report was false and intentionally misleading, and as a result took the man into custody without incident Thursday afternoon. The 55 year has been charged with one count Public Mischief and was later released on an Appearance Notice for court.
