2019 was a record-breaking year for the issuance of building permits in the Municipality of Central Elgin. The information was contained in a report to Central Elgin council Monday night.
A total of 403 building permits were issued in 2019. The previous high was 396 in 2016. The total value of construction in 2019 was just over $55 million, that’s up almost $14 million from the previous year.
New housing starts numbered 127 and several large projects started last year and are expected to be completed this year. These include the modernization and addition to Kettle Creek Public School in Port Stanley, Wonderland Mini Storage and two new buildings on the Dowler—Karn property east of St. Thomas.
The municipality is enjoying booming residential growth with Phase 3 of LittleCreek Subdivision in Port Stanley due to be completed this year and Sunset Bluffs subdivision, also in Port Stanley substantially complete.
Development of Kokomo Beach Subdivision is ongoing with lots along George Street now under construction. And, in Belmont, lots are still available in Robin Ridge Subdivision and the Robin Ridge Condos.
