Construction on the replacement Imperial Road bridge in Port Bruce is underway after Elgin County Council awarded the contract to Hayman Construction of London. The firm was the lowest of eight bidders at $5.1 million.
The original bridge collapsed into Catfish Creek exactly two years ago. The project involves removal of the remaining parts of the existing structure, construction of a new three-span steel girder bridge at the same location and reconstruction of all the roadway approaches.
Brian Lima, Elgin county’s engineering services director, explains the work involved with the approaches.
Lima says work is expected to be completed by the end of the year with the top coat of asphalt to be applied next spring.
