The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is reporting that one of their health care workers has tested positive for COVID-19. STEGH reports that the worker acquired the virus as a result of community transmission. The official diagnosis was confirmed on Monday (April 13) and STEGH says that the individual is self-isolating at home. They also report that prior to the diagnosis, the individual wore the appropriate personal protective equipment while working at the hospital.
At this time, STEGH and Southwestern Public Health are actively engaged in the investigation and contact tracing of staff and patients who were in close contact with the individual. They also say that appropriate measures have been implemented to monitor and mitigate the potential spread of the virus in the hospital.
Hospital President and CEO Robert Biron says that everyone who came into contact with the individual is in isolation.
Biron adds that the health care worker was isolated in a medical unit.
Biron says that keeping patients and staff safe is their first priority, and their team acted quickly and decisively to address the situation
