A 57 year old St. Thomas man is facing charges after threatening a male with a hatchet around 10 a.m. Sunday morning. The St. Thomas Police report that officers along with the Canine Unit tracked the male suspect into a gully after he threatened a 40 year old man with a hatchet in the area of Hincks and Centre Street.
Police say that the suspect was combative with officers when they located him, but were eventually able to place him under arrest.
Once in custody, the man was found to have sustained an injury and was transported to hospital where he was treated and released. No other injuries were reported during the incident. Due to the injury that was sustained, the Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and will continue to investigate the matter further.
At this time the 57 year old St. Thomas man has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, Resist Arrest and Possession of Stolen Property.
The STPS are asking any member of the public who may have witnessed the incident between the suspect and victim to please contact them or Crime Stoppers.
