The Provincial Government will be the first in the country to roll out a new made-in-Ontario national app called COVID Alert, with assistance from the Federal government.
The COVID Alert software is described as a privacy-first exposure notification app that will alert Ontarians when they may have been exposed to COVID-19.
COVID Alert will be made available within the next two weeks.
It is a made-in-Ontario app developed by the Ontario Digital Service (ODS) and a group of volunteers from Shopify.
The Provincial Government maintains one of the overarching principles of COVID Alert is ensuring the privacy and security of all users.
The government will leverage BlackBerry expertise to review the security and privacy of the application, in addition to the province’s internal security reviews.
Users will be able to voluntarily download the app and be notified anonymously if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
In Ontario, the app will also provide users with quick access to public health advice and resources, and recommend any necessary actions required.
As COVID Alert is a national app, you’ll be notified of a COVID contact no matter where in the country you may be.
