The Elgin County OPP and local first responders received some assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard last night after 4 kayakers needed rescuing on Lake Erie. At around 9 p.m. Tuesday night, officers were called to the area of Port Bruce when kayakers that were on the water couldn’t make it back to shore after conditions became rough.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was contacted and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was deployed to help in the rescue efforts. 2 of the kayakers were able to be picked up immediately by a boat, leaving 2 of them in the water with a diver from the helicopter who stay with them until another boat could arrive to pick them up.
1 of the kayakers suffered minor hypothermia as a result of the incident, however the OPP says that it was thanks to the fact that all 4 of them were wearing life jackets that no serious injuries or deaths occurred.
