With the summer finally here, the OPP has some safety tips to help save lives and reduce injuries. Personal floatation devices are one of the most under-utilized pieces of safety equipment according to the OPP. 7 of 8 boating deaths this year were results of people not wearing PFDs.
When riding a bicycle everyone under 18 must wear a helmet. For off-road vehicle users, a helmet is also important as 3 of 6 fatal off-road vehicle incidents were a result of people not wearing a helmet.
Seat belts are very important in all vehicles, but especially on the roadways, as lack of seat belt use has been linked to 20 OPP road fatalities this year alone.
For the remainder of Canada Day Week which runs until July 5th, police will be conducting a traffic safety campaign aimed at ensuring waterways, trails and roadways are safe and people are using proper lifesaving equipment.
