While the cooperation of visitors to beaches in Elgin county has been encouraging, Elgin county warden Dave Mennill advises keeping them open throughout the hot, humid summer will be a team effort. And that effort starts with beachgoers who have to follow provincial orders and directions from Southwestern Public Health. Mennill says key players on the beach are the volunteer firefighters who serve as ambassadors.
The advent of summer was one of the pressures Elgin county council faced when giving the green light to open them up to the public. It would be hard to do otherwise, admits Mennill.
He adds, all parties involved must remain vigilant in efforts to keep the beaches safe so that they can remain open during the summer given that the spread of COVID-19 remains real. That includes maintaining family and social circles and limiting beach time so others can enjoy.
