City council this afternoon will be asked to allow administration to begin the notice of intent process to declare the vacant Trinity Anglican Church a heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The church, which opened in 1877 four years before St. Thomas became a city, has been described as “an exemplary building representing the economic, cultural and architectural values of the City of St. Thomas.”
The structure is currently owned by the Anglican diocese, and according to the city’s Municipal Heritage Committee it is in relatively good condition.
The MHC goes on to note the former church is one of the most visually striking buildings in St. Thomas.
The council meeting begins at 5 p.m. and will be livestreamed on the city’s website.
