With the recent uptick in local cases, Southwestern Public Health is reminding the community that COVID-19 is still around.
The health unit says that following laboratory confirmation of 10 cases of COVID-19 in the Southwestern Public Health region over a 2-week period, Dr. Joyce Lock, Medical Officer of Health urges community members to behave as though everyone is a possible source of infection.
Dr. Lock says that “As a community, we’re tired. We want to let our guard down, but we can’t. There are 8 active cases in our region. They range in age from teens to mid 50s. While the source of infection has not been traced in all cases yet, often it resulted from close contact with a friend or family member.”
With our recent move to Phase 3 of re-opening, Dr. Lock says that our best bet for keeping COVID-19 cases down is to following 2 pieces of information.
First, if you have been instructed by public health to self-isolate at home, you must do so.
Second, physical distancing works. Our region is in Phase 3 of re-opening. It is really important to keep doing everything you can to protect yourself and those around you. Wash your hands frequently. Stay home when you are sick. Wear a non-medical mask. And importantly, unless you are in your social circle of ten people, keep 2 metres of distance between yourself and other people.
