As of last Friday, failing to self-isolate if you have symptoms of or are diagnosed with COVID-19 could result in a fine up to $5,000 per day. The penalty is the result of a Section 22 order under Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Act issued by Dr. Joyce Lock, Southwestern Public Health medical officer of health. She advises the next step in controlling the COVID-19 outbreak likely will be the mandatory wearing of face coverings while in public indoor spaces in the health unit’s coverage area.
Dr. Lock says details are now being worked out with municipalities as to whether they should issue an enforcement bylaw.
The health unit is coordinating with municipalities to make implementation of the policy as simple a process as possible for individuals, businesses and organizations across the region.
Dr. Lock adds she is encouraged to see the voluntary wearing of face coverings in indoor settings in St. Thomas, saying she appreciates that action as people follow the health unit’s guidance around masking.
