The provincial government is taking action to improve the health of the Great Lakes. Jeff Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, made the announcement Friday in Burlington.
The funding will support projects that address environmental challenges such as increased levels of pollutants, excess nutrients and rising numbers of invasive species.
In addition, Yurek announced the province is investing $1.7 million in the Great Lakes Local Action Fund.
Yurek noted protecting the Great Lakes is a key commitment in the province’s Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan.
One of the projects being funded is the following:
Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority: Thames River Gap Analysis and Pump Station Monitoring ($97,500)
This project will expand a community-based water monitoring program in the Lower Thames River watershed to year-round monitoring. This will help determine where excess nutrients are coming from and identify actions landowners can take to reduce nutrient overflow.
