It’s taken about 25 years, but Tuesday afternoon Dave and Maureen Jenkins of Belmont were on hand to witness the gold Childcan flag raised at the Elgin Heritage Centre in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
Their 12-year-old daughter Maggie died from cancer six years ago. For close to a quarter century, Dave has encouraged the county to amend its policy to allow the raising of flags representing organizations such as Childcan.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek said their advocacy has made a huge difference across the country.
Helping raise the flag was Jack Hildebrandt of Belmont, a childhood cancer survivor.
A similar ceremony will be held Wednesday at noon in front of St. Thomas city hall.
