The ground was officially broken this morning at 34 Hiawatha Street, the land where a brand new semi-detached home will be built thanks to Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario and the city of St. Thomas.
With face masks on and physical distancing in place, local leaders and representatives from Habitat for Humanity gathered to celebrate the beginning stages of what will be a new home and new life for 2 local families.
George De Vlugt General Manager of Construction for Habitat says there will be a couple special features to home.
De Vlugt adds that their homes are also geared to the owners income, meaning their mortgage will not exceed 30% of their income.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston says working with Habitat for Humanity continues to be a great thing for the community.
Prestons adds that thanks to groups like Habitat, we can solve our local housing crisis.
Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario is still accepting applications to own one of these homes in St. Thomas and local families who may qualify for the Habitat homeownership program are encouraged to take the eligibility quiz on the Habitat Heartland website.
