The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation has received a $28,908.37 grant to go towards the purchase of an isolette for the hospital.
The Drager Isolette 8000 which will benefit the Special Care Nursery at STEGH, was purchased thanks to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, who dream it is that all babies born too soon, too small or too sick will be cared for in a special care unit equipped with state of the art life-saving equipment close to their homes, family and friends.
Executive Director of the STEGH Foundation Jacqueline Bloom says that they are so grateful for the consistent donations and support from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, as the need for life-saving equipment for our Special Care Nursery to facilitate the care needed for premature births is essential to ensure the health and safety of these very special little ones that have a challenge getting started.
Sandra Schmirler was a Canadian curler who captured three Canadian Curling Championships and three World Curling Championships. She captained her Canadian team to a gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics the first year women’s curling was a medal sport.
A warm hearted mom of two, Sandra sadly passed away in 2000 at the age of 36 leaving a legacy that had a much farther reach than curling. The Sandra Schmirler Foundation is dedicated to helping families across Canada with newborn babies born too soon.
Sandra’s will to live is reflected in the fight for survival, often against the odds that is epitomized in these miracle babies.
