It’s been a thorn in the side of various editions of city council over the years and at last Monday’s reference committee meeting, members re-visted the issue of how best to deal with grants to community organizations.
In his presentation, city manager Wendell Graves reminded council, grant funding becomes a focal point annually during budget deliberations with little consistency in process from year to year.
This results in uncertainty each year with the four groups which rely heavily on city grants.
Over the past few years, the majority of grant funding has gone to the St. Thomas Seniors’ Centre, St. Thomas -Elgin Public Art Centre, St. Thomas Cemetery Company and the Talbot Teen Centre.
Maintaining this system will be a topic for further discussion prior to 2021 budget deliberations, which will begin before the end of this year.
