Two months ago, 35-year-old Cindy Devine of St. Thomas was killed in a fiery crash on Highbury Avenue north of St. Thomas. She was heading into London to work at her family’s cross-stitch business. Her vehicle was struck head-on by a 23-year-old St. Thomas man who allegedly crossed the centre line. He has been charged with two impaired driving offences.
Yesterday (Saturday) at the main fire hall in St. Thomas, Extinguishers for Cindy held their first draw for the giveaway of 100 extinguishers, donated equally by Messenger Freight Systems and Elgin Fire Extinguishers. Her sister, Christine Rozon, says it is encouraging so many people are taking this tragic incident to heart.
The aim of the campaign is to have Cindy’s Law enacted whereby all vehicles must be equipped with a fire extinguisher. Rozon adds it would be easy to duplicate this safety campaign in other municipalities.
She says there is nothing that can bring her sister back.
A second draw on Saturday, Dec. 19 will see a another batch of extinguishers given away. To enter, visit Extinguishers for Cindy on Facebook. Or, if you would like to order an extinguisher as a Christmas gift, contact Darrel Grant at Elgin Fire Extinguishers 519-633-5288. He is offering them at cost through this campaign.
